PRAYER SOUGHT
“Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.
PATIENT WAITING FOR THE LORD’S ADVENT
5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.
SEPARATION FROM EVIL ASSOCIATIONS ENJOINED
6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
IDLE BUSYBODIES REBUKED
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.
BENEDICTIONS
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”
The second epistle to the Thessalonians was written from Athens.
- THE PRAYER—vv. 1–5
PRAYER SOUGHT
- Preaching—v. 1. Prayer that God’s Word may be preached with freedom and liberty.
- Protection—v. 2. Prayer for protection of the Gospel. Prayer that the Gospel would not be hindered.
- Promise—v. 3. Christ will keep us free from the power of Satan. Satan can only go so far.
- Practice—v. 4. Paul had faith in the people, that they would practice what he taught.
PATIENT WAITING FOR THE LORD’S ADVENT
- Patience—v. 5. By patience, we understand God better. Prepares us for His coming.
- THE PROBLEM—vv. 6–13
SEPARATION FROM EVIL ASSOCIATIONS ENJOINED
- Separation—v. 6. Stay away from lazy people. This laziness will have an influence upon you.
- Showing—vv. 7–9. Paul sets the example by not being lazy. LAZINESS IS SIN!
IDLE BUSYBODIES REBUKED
- Soundness—v. 10. The person who doesn’t work should not eat. Always work hard at what you do.
- Sinning—v. 11. Laziness leads to gossiping.
APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY
- Sincere—vv. 12–13. Work hard. Don’t become tired in doing good work.
III. THE PURITY—vv. 14–15
- Withdrawing—v. 14. Withdraw from those who do not obey the teachings of God’s Word.
- Warning—v. 15. Warn them of their wrong in love.
- THE PARTING—vv. 16–17
- Peace—v. 16. God gives peace to heart, soul and mind.
- Proof—v. 17. Paul wrote this epistle and others with his own hand.
BENEDICTIONS
- Prayer—v. 18. Paul prays God’s blessing upon the people at Thessalonica.
- THE AMEN OF ROMANS 16:20, 24, 27
16:20 “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.”
16:24 “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”
16:27 “To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.”
