Promises of Christ

March 9, 2021

  1. Starting point: 1 Tim. 2:1-6

  1. Praying from: HEBREWS 8

“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

2     A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

Duty of priests

3     For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

4     For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

ANCIENT TYPES AND SHADOWS

5     Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

SUPERIORITY OF THE NEW DISPENSATION

6     But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7     For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8     For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9     Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

THE NEW COVENANT

10     For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11     And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12     For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13     In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

DUTY OF PRIESTS

  1. THE PROMISE—vv. 1–7
  2. Person—vv. 1–2. Christ, our High Priest is in heaven with God. Heaven made by God—not human hands.
  3. Practice—v. 3. Since all priests offered gifts, so Christ offered a gift—His life upon the cross.
  4. Problem—v. 4. Christ could not be an earthly priest, since they followed the Old Testament Jewish ceremonial laws.

ANCIENT TYPES AND SHADOWS

  1. Pattern—v. 5. Moses built the earthly tabernacle according to heavenly standards, given to him by God.

SUPERIORITY OF THE NEW DISPENSATION

  1. Promises—v. 6. Christ’s work as a High Priest is more important than an earthly priest. Also God promises more hope through Christ than through man.
  2. Peril—v. 7. The old covenant did not really work. It needed something better and different.
  3. THE PROBLEM—vv. 8–9
  4. Promise—v. 8. “But God Himself found fault with the old one, for He said, ‘The day will come when I will make a new agreement with the people of Israel and the people of Judah.’ ”—LNT.
  5. Punishment—v. 9. The people did not, and could not keep the Old Covenant, so God cancelled it!

THE NEW COVENANT

III. THE PURGING—vv. 10–13

  1. People—v. 10. God’s laws would be put into the minds and hearts of the people.
  2. Proof—v. 11. The people would know the Lord. They would know Him by His works to His people.
  3. Purging—v. 12. God would be merciful to them in their wrong doings, and would forgive their sins. He not only forgives, but forgets man’s sins.
  4. Promises—v. 13. The Old Testament Jewish laws did not save. If these laws saved, then why did Christ suffer and die upon the cross?
